GPTZero vs ZeroGPT: Features, Free Limits and Evidence
Which should you try?
Choose a trial based on the review process you need. GPTZero emphasizes writing analysis and drafting context; ZeroGPT offers a direct checker and report workflow. Their similar names do not indicate a shared product. Neither has earned an accuracy win in a test by this site.

Characters are not a subscription quota
A field counter describes how much text fits in that interface. It does not establish how often you can scan, which features require an account or how paid word allowances renew. Check GPTZero pricing and ZeroGPT pricing with the same billing period selected. Current individual prices could not be reliably confirmed from their public tables during this review.
For drafting context and a documented classification explanation, start your GPTZero evaluation there. For a straightforward public checker and report workflow, inspect ZeroGPT. Do not choose an accuracy winner from two marketing percentages or treat a larger text box as a better detector.
Decision matrix by reader
| Reader and job | First evaluation | Pass/fail question |
|---|---|---|
| A writer checking a draft | Inspect highlighted passages and preserve draft history | Does the feedback identify a real writing issue, rather than trigger score chasing? |
| An educator reviewing disputed work | Evaluate process evidence and your institution’s policy | Can the result be reviewed fairly with the author and supported by other evidence? |
| An editor screening submissions | Test document extraction, reports and source review | Can another editor reproduce what was checked and why it was flagged? |
| A developer buying an API | Compare API contracts and metering separately from web plans | Are response meanings, retention, limits and failure handling documented for this route? |
Compare disclosure, not just claimed accuracy
GPTZero’s technology page explains three classifications and notes that prediction confidence is separate from the proportion of AI text. ZeroGPT’s FAQ describes its linguistic and statistical signals and recommends longer input. Those explanations help interpret outputs; neither proves superiority on an unseen document.
An older independent study, Testing of Detection Tools for AI-Generated Text (2023), found substantial reliability problems and sensitivity to obfuscation in the systems it tested. That is evidence about its historical test conditions, not a fresh ranking of October 2026 versions. A useful current comparison must name the current product route, model where disclosed, language, sample construction and decision threshold.
Why GPTZero and ZeroGPT can disagree
Newer evidence can differ from older results. The 2025 Chicago research brief compares Pangram, OriginalityAI, GPTZero and RoBERTa, with favorable results for Pangram in its setting. ZeroGPT is not one of those four systems. It cannot supply a head-to-head GPTZero-versus-ZeroGPT result.
Different classifiers, thresholds and preprocessing can return different labels for the same text. A short extracted passage may also differ from the original full document. When two reports disagree, averaging their numbers creates a statistic neither vendor defined. Choosing whichever result matches a prior suspicion is no better.
- Confirm both reports used the exact same input. Compare extraction, word count and omitted sections.
- Record each report’s classification, confidence wording, date and interface. Do not rename a confidence score as a word percentage.
- Identify the specific passages at issue and inspect citations, notes and draft history.
- If the origin remains unresolved, record uncertainty. Another score is not guaranteed to settle the matter.
The base-rate problem: even a low false-positive rate matters
Suppose 1,000 documents contain only 10 generated examples. A hypothetical checker catches 90% of those and falsely flags 1% of the 990 human documents. It returns about 9 true flags and 9.9 false flags: fewer than half the expected flags are true. These are invented assumptions, not a measurement of either product. The example explains why “99% specific” does not mean every flagged document has a 99% chance of being generated.
A fair comparison you can actually run
Build a labeled set before viewing detector output. Include known human originals, generated documents with saved prompts and mixed drafts with an edit log. Include relevant languages, genres and length bands; do not make the human group all informal writing and the AI group all essays. Keep documents from the same source grouped when splitting development and evaluation data to reduce leakage.
Choose the classification rule in advance and retain uncertain results as their own outcome. Count false positives over human documents and misses over generated documents. Report mixed documents separately when the tool’s categories differ. A tiny sample can reveal obvious failures but has wide statistical uncertainty; it cannot support universal “best detector” claims.

Privacy comparison: ask about the product route
Read the GPTZero privacy policy and ZeroGPT privacy policy alongside feature-specific statements. Neither a website-wide cookie policy nor an API promise automatically resolves how a saved dashboard report is handled. Ask whether content is stored, used for training, shared through a report, indexed for matching and retained in backups. Those are separate questions.
What would justify paying?
Pay for a workflow you have verified: enough capacity for your document sizes, analysis that saves review time, usable reports, appropriate account controls and terms that fit the documents. If the paid feature cannot be evaluated, choose a short commitment or request a representative demonstration before budgeting an annual workflow. We have not confirmed current individual checkout prices and do not fill that gap with stale numbers from a competitor page.
Frequently asked questions
Which is more accurate, GPTZero or ZeroGPT?
This site has not performed a matched current-version benchmark. Vendor percentages and studies of older versions do not establish a present-day winner. Use the documented workflow differences to shortlist, then evaluate a labeled sample from your actual task.
Which has more free text capacity?
At the check date, the public fields showed 10,000 characters for GPTZero and 15,000 for ZeroGPT. That describes a single visible input field. It does not establish repeat-scan frequency, monthly free quotas or paid-plan value.
Should I run both and accept the majority answer?
Two outputs are not a majority, and adding another detector does not automatically create independent evidence. Preserve disagreements, check the inputs and examine provenance. A voting rule needs validation on a labeled dataset before it can be treated as reliable.
Can I cite a score in an appeal?
Preserve the complete report and how it was interpreted, but pair it with drafts, notes and the applicable policy. A cropped percentage omits the model’s qualifications and the input context. This guide recommends evidence review, not a detector-only verdict.
