ChatGPT vs Claude: two generators, different defaults
Not a trophy. Both write, code, and call tools. Use this page to pick the default — distribution and UX (ChatGPT) versus long-context caution (Claude) — not to retire the other model.
| Task | ChatGPT / GPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Chat | Primary job | Primary job |
| Writing | Primary job | Primary job |
| Coding | Generate, explain, iterate | Generate, explain, iterate |
| Long documents | Capable; SKU and context limits apply | Capable; SKU and context limits apply |
| Multimodal | Images / audio via product + tools | Images / audio via product + tools |
| Classification | Possible via schema or tools | Possible via schema or tools |
| Model routing | Possible, you pay generation for a choice | Possible, you pay generation for a choice |
| Typed decisions only | Wrong default — use a decision model or a frozen classifier | Wrong default — use a decision model or a frozen classifier |
The actual question
Not “which AI is smarter?” Both generate. Ask: who is already in the loop, and what failure is expensive? ChatGPT wins on distribution and “my users already have a tab open.” Claude wins when the default should be a careful long-context reader. Those are product defaults, not IQ scores from this desk.
Where they are the same
- Chat, writing, coding, tools, optional JSON schema.
- Input + output token bills. A closed label still costs generation.
- Alias churn. Pin versions.
- Neither replaces a decision model when the only output is allow / deny / route.
Lean ChatGPT when
- The audience already lives in ChatGPT.
- You need the widest plugin / gateway / “works with GPT” graph.
- You want one vendor for consumer chat and API agents.
- A cheaper GPT sibling is good enough and you do not want to leave OpenAI.
Lean Claude when
- The artifact is a long document a human will ship.
- You want Anthropic’s safer-defaults stance as the house style — a vendor claim, widely repeated, not independently scored here.
- The workload already sits on Bedrock, Vertex, or Foundry with a Claude id.
- You are tired of ChatGPT-shaped refusals or ChatGPT-shaped verbosity on your traces. That is a local measurement. Do it on your data.
Price is not the decider
Workhorse list prices as of 20 Sep 2026 (vendor claims): GPT-5 $1.25 / $10, Claude Sonnet 5 $2 / $10, Claude Opus 5 $5 / $25, GPT-5.6 Sol $4 / $20. The overlap is huge. Caching, batch, and reasoning tokens move the real bill more than the brand. See official rate cards before you argue cents.
What we will not declare
A winner. Public leaderboards disagree by task and by week. If you need a typed decision instead of either model, leave this page and open Jev vs LLM.
