Not “OpenAI or Google?” Ask: where does the work already live? ChatGPT is the default assistant graph. Gemini is the default if the identity, docs, search, or Vertex project are already Google’s.
Where they are the same
- General-purpose generation: chat, writing, coding, tools.
- Multimodal inputs on current SKUs.
- Schema-constrained JSON is available and still generation.
- Wrong tool if you only needed a typed decision — see Jev.
Lean ChatGPT when
- Users already open ChatGPT. Switching cost is the product.
- You want the largest third-party tool and plugin graph.
- Your agents are already written against OpenAI tool-calling shapes.
Lean Gemini when
- You need Search / Maps grounding as a first-party meter, not a bolted-on browse tool.
- The corpus is Drive / Workspace / YouTube / Android-adjacent.
- Flash 3.8’s promotional list price ($0.75 / $3.75 through 31 Dec 2026, vendor claim) is the budget and the quality holds on a bake-off.
- Image / live / native multimodal SKUs are the job, not a side feature.

GPT-5 $1.25 / $10; GPT-5.6 Sol $4 / $20; Gemini 3.8 Flash $0.75 / $3.75 (promo window); Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview $2 / $12 (≤200k). Flash looks cheap until thinking tokens and grounding queries show up. Pro looks like every other flagship. Measure the path you will actually call.
