Browserbase: Browser Agents, Usage Costs and Review Controls
What is Browserbase for?
Browserbase supplies cloud browser sessions and APIs for agent workflows, including web interaction, search and fetching. Its documentation also describes Stagehand as a browser-agent SDK. This is infrastructure for building or operating workflows, rather than a guarantee that every website can be automated reliably.
Who should consider it?
Engineering teams working with sites that require navigation or forms may need a real browser instead of a text-fetch API. Start with the least complex approach: a supported application API is often easier to validate than a browser path. Browserbase becomes more relevant when the required task depends on page state or interactions.
How is it priced?
The official pricing page lists a free plan with one browser hour and three concurrent browsers. Developer is $20 per month with 100 browser hours, then $0.12 per browser hour. Proxy traffic, model usage and other services have separate allowances or charges. These are infrastructure units, not a guaranteed number of completed business tasks.
What is a useful first trial?
Use a sandbox portal containing synthetic records. Ask the workflow to locate one record, extract two fields and prepare a proposed update without submitting it. Include a session expiry and a missing record. Keep the intended outcome and allowed actions in a short test specification before running the agent.
What should you measure?
Check whether the extracted record is the right one, whether the agent recognizes that login has expired, and whether it stops at the agreed approval point. Record browser time, model spend and retries for each accepted result. A replay can help diagnose a wrong click, but it is not proof that the final business record is correct.
What access needs review?
A browser session may expose cookies, account data and permission to change external systems. Use a separate test account with narrow permissions. Decide which actions require review and ensure retries cannot duplicate a submission. Validate logout, session cleanup and sensitive-field handling before using real customer records.
Which alternatives should you compare?
For URL-to-text collection, compare Firecrawl and Jina Reader; they address a narrower retrieval need. For browser automation, compare a directly managed Playwright environment. Include maintenance and debugging effort when comparing hosted infrastructure with operating browsers yourself.
