What is Cartesia?

Cartesia combines text-to-speech, speech recognition and managed voice-agent infrastructure. Check pronunciation, interruptions and separate model, agent and phone-call costs.

Pricing and access

Free includes 20,000 monthly credits. Pro is $5 per month with 100,000 credits and commercial-use licensing. Managed-agent duration is listed separately at $0.03 per minute; Cartesia-provided telephony is $0.014 per minute, and LLM usage is billed separately.

When does it make sense?

Consider it when spoken output belongs inside an interactive product. The documentation describes Sonic generation, Ink transcription and managed agents. Decide whether you need one component or the hosted conversation workflow; the latter changes your integration, permissions and billing surface.

A useful voice trial

Prepare a script with brand names, dates, prices, acronyms and meaning-dependent emphasis. Render styles without changing the words. Listen without reading, then compare against the source. Check omissions and pronunciation before judging naturalness. For live use, include a caller who changes a date halfway through the response.

Avoid misleading latency comparisons

Measure from the final user utterance to meaningful audible output, including networking and tools. A response can appear fast because it starts before a correction is finished. Record repeated results under consistent conditions, and inspect the final action arguments as well as the spoken answer.

Rights and permissions

Check commercial terms before distributing audio. Use stock voices with suitable licensing or a voice whose owner permitted the intended use. Cloning capability is not permission to imitate someone. Give agent tools only the business permissions required and define separate retention rules for recordings, transcripts and action logs.

Alternatives and selection

Compare Deepgram for another voice stack and WellSaid for narration. Downloadable voiceovers and live agents require different acceptance tests.
