n8n: AI Workflow Automation, Execution Pricing and Controls
What does n8n do with AI?
n8n connects workflow steps with LLM providers, tools, memory and MCP integrations. AI can be one step inside a larger process, such as classifying a request before routing it to a review queue. Treat the workflow as a sequence of explicit actions rather than assuming an agent should decide every step.
Who should consider it?
Operations teams and developers integrating several business applications may need triggers, conditional logic and controlled handoffs. If the task is only answering questions over documents, a dedicated knowledge-app builder may be simpler. Workflow ownership and recovery procedures matter as much as the visual canvas.
How is it priced?
The official page lists Starter at €20 per month billed annually, with 2,500 workflow executions. Pro is €50 per month billed annually with 10,000 executions. A cloud trial and self-hosted Community Edition are offered. Model usage and hosting can create additional costs; verify which AI credits and services are included in the selected plan.
What is a safe first workflow?
Use synthetic intake messages and a test spreadsheet. Classify each message into a small set of categories, prepare a draft routing decision and require review before any external notification. Include duplicate input events, a missing field and a temporary provider error. Give each input a stable identifier so you can trace what happened.
What should the trial demonstrate?
Check that duplicate events do not create duplicate records, failed calls do not cause endless retries and uncertain classifications go to review. Verify which steps have already completed when execution stops. A workflow that works once can still fail after a retry if its write operations are not designed to be repeatable.
What access and maintenance issues matter?
Connections may hold credentials with permission to read or change external accounts. Use narrowly scoped test credentials first, and keep secrets out of prompts and execution logs. Self-hosting adds patching, backups and monitoring. Review the software license and current plan features before offering the system as a service to other organizations.
Which alternatives fit?
Compare Dify and Langflow for AI application and knowledge workflows. Compare ordinary application APIs or scheduled scripts when the process has fixed rules and few steps. Prefer the approach whose failures your team can diagnose and recover from.
