OpenRouter: Multi-Model API Routing and Pricing Guide
OpenRouter offers a common API for selecting models from multiple providers, along with model discovery and routing controls. It can reduce provider-specific integration work, but it does not make different models equivalent: context limits, tool support, latency, availability and provider terms still vary.
Pricing: separate platform fees from model usage
The public pricing page lists a free plan with 25+ free models and a stated limit of 50 requests per day. Standard and Business are pay-as-you-go and display platform fees of 5.5% and 8%, respectively; enterprise terms are sales-led. Model input/output prices are separate and vary by model and provider. Recheck the selected plan and current fee wording before budgeting, because the pricing page can change.
When the shared API helps
It is a candidate for prototypes that compare several model providers or applications that need a documented fallback path. For a production integration using one provider, a direct provider API may be simpler to audit and may avoid an extra routing layer. The service’s provider availability is not a guarantee that every model supports the same features.
Run a controlled model comparison
- Choose one non-sensitive task and a short fixed input.
- Pick two models with the required context and tool features; record the exact model IDs.
- Keep system prompt, output format and sampling settings constant where supported.
- Compare factual corrections against an answer key, malformed structured output, latency and the actual token charge.
- Only then test routing or fallback behavior, including provider errors and rate limits.
This makes model choice traceable to your task rather than a generic benchmark rank.
Data and operational limits
Requests may be handled by the selected inference provider as well as the routing service. Check data-retention and training terms for both parties, and avoid sending secrets or regulated data until those terms and routing settings have been reviewed. Pin model IDs for reproducibility and monitor usage; free model access and provider availability may change.
When to choose another route
Use a provider’s native API when you need one vendor’s full feature set and direct billing. Compare Replicate for hosted model endpoints that use per-model inference billing rather than a general multi-provider chat API.
