Pinecone: Vector Search, Plans and Production Fit
Pinecone is a managed database for vector search and related retrieval workloads. The current plan page lists dense, sparse and full-text indexes and optional services such as inference and Assistant. These capabilities can support retrieval-augmented generation, but the database does not by itself guarantee relevant answers: chunking, metadata, embeddings and retrieval evaluation remain part of the application.
Plans and minimum costs
As displayed on Pinecone’s official pricing page on November 3, 2026, Starter is free, Builder is $20 per month, Standard has a $50 monthly minimum and Enterprise has a $500 monthly minimum. The Standard page also advertises a three-week trial with $300 in credits. Usage-based database, inference and Assistant charges can apply under paid plans; confirm included allowances, cloud/region choices and support add-ons before estimating total cost.
When a managed vector database is a fit
Consider Pinecone when a team needs hosted vector retrieval and wants a service boundary around index operations, scaling and observability. If the corpus is small and already lives in PostgreSQL, compare pgvector or a Postgres-based search path before adding another database. If you require private-cloud control, confirm the plan and deployment options first.
Evaluate retrieval with a small gold set
- Choose 20–50 representative questions and the source passages that should answer them.
- Keep document chunking, embedding model and metadata filters explicit.
- Measure whether the correct source appears in the top results, not only whether the generated answer sounds plausible.
- Test updates, deletions, duplicate documents and filtered queries.
- Track read/write volume, index size and observed latency against the plan’s current billing units.
This separates retrieval quality from the quality of the language model that consumes retrieved passages.
Limits and data flow
Documents, vectors and metadata are stored in a managed service; if you use a separate embedding or generation API, those requests have their own providers and terms. Review retention, region, access controls and deletion behavior for the full pipeline. Plan minimums matter: a free prototype can have a different cost profile from a production Standard or Enterprise deployment.
When to choose another route
Compare a Postgres vector extension when relational data and retrieval should share one database. Compare other hosted vector services only after fixing the same corpus, embeddings, filters and top-k acceptance criteria; feature checklists alone do not establish recall or latency.
