Unstructured: Document Processing, Page Costs and RAG Quality
What does Unstructured provide?
Unstructured offers document transformation and data-pipeline products for preparing source material for AI workflows. Its public pricing page describes extraction, connectors and hosted or dedicated deployment options. The central task is turning heterogeneous source documents into usable structured material, before a retrieval or question-answering system tries to reason over it.
Who is it for?
Teams ingesting mixed document types or repeatedly refreshing a knowledge collection can evaluate it as part of their data pipeline. A small set of clean text files may not justify a separate service. Start by identifying the formats and layout problems that cause incorrect answers today, rather than treating ingestion as a problem solved simply by adding more documents.
What does page pricing mean?
The current page offers 10,000 free pages when an account starts and then $0.015 per page on pay-as-you-go. This is an initial allowance, not a claim of 10,000 free pages every month. Business deployment is custom-priced. Confirm page counting for your formats and whether repeated processing, selected pipeline steps or downstream storage affect the full cost.
How should you assess extraction?
Use a synthetic packet containing a two-column policy, a table with merged headings and a scanned page. Record the answers to five questions before processing. Check reading order, table header relationships, page references and missing characters in the extracted result. Keep parser errors separate from retrieval errors so you know which part of the pipeline needs adjustment.
What should acceptance include?
Each answerable question should remain supported by an identifiable source passage. Ambiguous or missing text should stay visibly uncertain. Test one updated document and one removed document to check freshness through the downstream index. Review which connector credentials the service receives, where files are processed and how deletion or retention applies to both intermediate and final data.
Which alternatives fit?
Compare LlamaParse for document parsing and extraction. Compare Firecrawl when the primary source is a website rather than a document collection. Use the same difficult pages and judge retained relationships, not just the amount of text returned.
