Zed: AI Editor, External Agents and Usage Billing

AI Tools Ratings Content updated Sources & review method

What does Zed offer for AI development?

Zed combines a code editor with agent-assisted editing and a unified diff for reviewing changes. Its AI page describes external agents connected through ACP and tools connected through MCP. The editor is the workspace for that interaction; the selected agent and model still determine much of the reasoning, tool use and data handling.

Who is it for?

Developers who want to follow edits as they happen and keep reviewing inside the editor can evaluate Zed as a daily workspace. Before switching, verify language tooling, required extensions and team conventions. An attractive agent interface cannot compensate for a missing debugger or an unsupported project workflow that you use every day.

What does the pricing page show?

Personal is listed at $0 with support for your own API keys or external agents. Pro is $10 per month with $5 of tokens included and usage billing beyond that amount. Business is $30 per seat per month for organizational controls and does not bundle a fixed LLM allowance. External provider or agent subscriptions are separate from the editor price.

How should you evaluate the editing workflow?

Use a small application with a repeated form-validation function. Ask the agent to extract the shared logic while keeping the two forms independently configurable. Review the unified diff before committing and try rejecting one unwanted edit. Check that navigating between files and accepting selected changes does not lose a manual edit made outside the agent task.

What should acceptance cover?

Both forms should preserve their existing error messages and keyboard behavior. Tests should distinguish the shared rule from form-specific rules. Confirm which agent received the files and which tool connections it could use. For team adoption, inspect model policy enforcement separately from the editing experience, and calculate external-agent costs as well as any hosted-model overage.
