Anthropic MCP Builder Skill

Guides the design, implementation and evaluation of an MCP server that exposes external capabilities to an agent. It covers tool naming, error handling and task-oriented evaluation rather than merely generating an API wrapper.

What task is this skill designed for?

Build a local read-only MCP server that exposes two approved lookup operations against a synthetic dataset.

What input and output should you expect?

Input: The allowed operations, data schema, intended client, transport requirements and the exact authentication boundary.

Output: Expected, not independently tested: a server implementation and evaluation cases. A generated server still needs security review, integration testing and deployment planning.

What does it need to run?

A current MCP SDK and a suitable Python or TypeScript environment, plus protocol and SDK documentation matching the selected versions. Access to a live external API is optional for a synthetic prototype and should not be requested by default.

Published by Anthropic as a Claude skill example; its repository documents Claude Code installation. Not independently installed or executed here.

How should you approach installation?

  1. Inspect the pinned skill and its framework references.
  2. Choose SDK versions from current official documentation and begin with synthetic local data.
  3. Review the exposed operations before connecting any real service or deploying the server.

What files, accounts or data can it access?

Can generate code and run local services. When connected to real systems, exposed tools inherit the API permissions they are given; narrowly scoped read credentials are preferable for a lookup prototype.

What does the skill cost?

Skill source has no listed purchase price. API access, hosting and agent execution can incur separate costs.

What are its limits and alternatives?

Tool availability does not establish that authorization is correct. Pagination, retries, untrusted tool results and write operations require explicit design. Protocol and SDK versions can change independently of the skill source.

Use an existing maintained integration if it already exposes the required operations. Choose mcp-builder when a custom capability needs a stable, documented tool interface.

What could you ask in a small trial?

Try this with a small sample:

Design a local read-only MCP prototype for this synthetic catalog. Expose only list and lookup tools, document validation and errors, and propose tests before adding authentication or deployment.

How would you verify the result?

  1. Check malformed input and access-denied behavior as well as successful calls.
  2. Confirm no tool can reach an unintended operation or destination.
  3. Run representative client tasks and compare outputs with the underlying data.

Use a baseline and record acceptance evidence before treating a successful task as a reliable workflow.
