Apify: Data Collection Actors, AI Inputs and Usage Costs

AI Tools Ratings Content updated Sources & review method

What is Apify used for?

Apify provides a platform for running Actors, including data-collection tasks that can supply downstream AI applications. The pricing page distinguishes marketplace Actors from workloads you build yourself. Treat an Actor as a specific program with its own input and output contract, not as a guarantee that every website or source can be collected reliably.

Who should consider it?

Developers who need repeatable collection jobs may prefer a hosted run-and-output workflow over maintaining every scraper locally. The important selection step is to inspect the individual Actor, its publisher and its supported source. A large catalog does not mean that all entries have equivalent maintenance, permissions or suitability for your use case.

How do the costs combine?

Free includes $5 of platform spending. Starter is listed at $19 per month plus pay-as-you-go usage, with $19 to spend and a $0.20 compute-unit rate. Actor pricing may be per event, per usage or a combination. Estimate Actor fees, compute and any other metered resources together; a plan allowance is not a fixed number of accepted records.

What should you collect in a first trial?

Choose a small set of public pages you are permitted to process, with a known expected record count and a few missing fields. Define the required URL, title, date and content fields before the run. Keep cookies, account credentials and personal data out of the trial. Inspect a sample of the underlying pages rather than trusting a completed-job indicator.

What should the output preserve?

Check duplicate handling, source URLs, timestamps and whether blank values are distinguished from unavailable pages. Pass the resulting records to a small retrieval task and verify that answers cite the correct source. Count records that actually meet the contract when estimating cost. A successful extraction can still produce stale or incomplete evidence for an AI assistant.

Which alternatives fit?

Compare Firecrawl for crawl-and-extract workflows, Jina Reader for known-URL text extraction and Browserbase when interactive browser state is necessary. None removes the need to inspect source permissions and data quality.
