Descript: Workflow, Credits and Output Review
Text-based audio and video editing, with transcription, captions and plan-dependent AI production tools.
Who should consider Descript
Editors turning interviews, tutorials or podcasts into a finished story. Start with recorded speech when you want precise control over which statements survive the edit.
Features and pricing
The official feature pages describe editing media through its transcript, caption creation, clip extraction and the Underlord assistant. The paid plan comparison separates media-processing hours from AI credits.
Free includes 60 media minutes per month. Hobbyist lists 10 media hours and 400 AI credits monthly; higher tiers change allowances and export options. Check the selected monthly or annual billing term before purchasing. Import duration and AI processing are different budgets.

A practical evaluation task
Use a permitted five-minute interview containing a corrected date, one interruption and a deliberate pause. Produce a 60-second excerpt with captions while retaining the speaker's intended answer.
Keep the original recording, a written list of required facts and a target aspect ratio. Compare the exported clip with the source at every cut. Correct transcript names before cutting; otherwise a visually tidy transcript can hide a misleading edit.
What a useful result must pass
Accept the result only if the corrected date remains correct, captions stay inside the crop, audio joins sound natural and removing hesitations has not changed meaning. Record manual repair time and credits consumed; those are useful purchasing measures, unlike a vendor speed claim.
Limits and data access
Voice cloning requires the appropriate rights and consent. Uploaded recordings can include confidential statements; check workspace access and retention before importing client material. Generated replacement speech should not silently alter a quotation.
Alternatives and tradeoffs
Compare Otter for meeting records and action tracking, or Runway for generating new visual shots. A timeline editor may be the better fit for complex compositing; text editing is most useful when speech carries the story.
