What GPTZero does
GPTZero checks text for signals of AI writing. Its official website offers pasted text and file uploads, and describes Writing Replay for inspecting the writing process in Google Docs. This makes it a candidate for reviewers who also want drafting context. A detector result alone cannot reconstruct who wrote a document.
Access and limits
The public text field displayed a 10,000-character limit when checked. That is an input-field limit, not a confirmed monthly word allowance. The site directs larger scans toward a free account. Individual paid prices and account quotas were not reliably exposed in the public pricing page during this check, so we do not repeat older figures. Confirm billing period, word allowance and features in the current checkout.
What changed recently
The September 24 GPTZero 4o announcement describes detection of mixed or modified text and additional analysis views. Performance comparisons in that announcement are the vendor’s benchmarks; this site has not reproduced them.

What a GPTZero probability actually tells you
GPTZero’s technology explanation separates human, mixed and AI classifications and describes confidence categories. It also distinguishes prediction confidence from the proportion of AI text. A confident document classification should not be interpreted as a count of sentences written by a model. Sentence highlights are pointers for inspection, not a reconstruction of the writing session.
Consider an editor seeing a document-level percentage and three highlighted passages. The useful follow-up is to examine those passages and their sources, not to convert the percentage into “this many words were cheated.” Save the report’s own labels and explanations so another reviewer can see what was actually returned.
Writing evidence can be more useful than another score
A drafting timeline answers a different question from AI classification: how did a document change over time? A detector estimates origin from the final text; a process record can show revisions, pasted blocks and the sequence of work. Neither alone explains the author’s intent. Collaborative edits, offline drafting and accessibility workflows may need context.
Our recommended trial compares the quality of the conversation the tools support. Can a reviewer identify the disputed passage, understand what the report means and ask a specific question? Do not call an account successful merely because it produces a visually impressive percentage.
Web dashboard and API privacy need separate answers
The technology FAQ says API document inputs are not stored and describes different handling for dashboard use. Its privacy policy covers account information, service use and other processing. Treat the API statement as a vendor description of that route, not a blanket contract for every upload, extension or institution account. Confirm product-specific terms before transferring confidential submissions.
A five-document workflow check
This is a usability pilot, not an accuracy benchmark. Choose one known human draft with revision history, one generated document with the prompt saved, one human-edited generated draft, one domain-specific document and one upload with complex formatting. Have a reviewer who did not prepare them inspect the reports before revealing the provenance.

Choosing between GPTZero and other options
ZeroGPT is a separate brand with a larger visible public text field in our check. That can improve convenience for a single paste, but it does not establish better accuracy or privacy. Frequently asked questions
Is GPTZero the same as ZeroGPT?
No. GPTZero uses gptzero.me and ZeroGPT uses zerogpt.com. Check the domain when saving a result or looking up an allowance; names, reports and plan entitlements should not be mixed.
What if GPTZero flags a human-written essay?
Save the original report and input, collect drafts and notes, and ask which passages drove the classification. Avoid rewriting merely to lower the score. A lower score would not establish authorship any more than the original flag establishes misconduct.
Does a high confidence label mean 100% certainty?
No. Confidence describes the model’s prediction under its calibration. The writing type, language and model version can differ from the data used to calibrate it. Treat strong confidence as a reason to inspect the evidence carefully, not permission to skip review.
Can I use GPTZero for short messages or code?
Do not assume prose-oriented detection transfers reliably to a short chat, a code file or a reference list. GPTZero’s technology page says it performs best on longer English prose. Validate your intended input rather than transferring results from a different genre.
